Automatic Crane & Monorail Process Control

Application

Process and dip tank systems utilizing either single or multiple overhead cranes or monorail carriers service a variety of industries. Phosphate coating, pickling, anodizing, plating, cleaning and electrostatic painting systems are often found in the automotive, aerospace, steel and aluminum industries. In addition, the textile industry uses automated dipping systems for washing, dyeing and finishing materials.

Problem

Manual handling of parts or assemblies through repetitive processes can cause operator fatigue, often resulting in product or equipment damage as well as personnel injury. Manually operating a process system does not utilize equipment and personnel most efficiently because the operator must also handle the supervisory functions as well as the interface with other machinery. This often results in reduced system efficiency and equipment utilization.

Solution

Automating a monorail or crane system handling parts through processing stations or dip tank lines reduces equipment damage, improves inventory accuracy and control, provides flexibility in the process and improves operator safety. Modern crane controls and positioning systems make it possible to automate existing process systems as well as new installations.

When a crane or monorail system, or part of that system, is automated, the system becomes more like a process tool than a material handling device. Automation can perform specific repetitive tasks with extreme precision, reliably for long periods of time. In addition individual system controllers can be combined and directly interfaced with area or plant wide supervisory systems.
